Walter Vanderwood, 91, of Wenatchee, WA, was received into the arms of his beloved Savior, Jesus, on May 13, 2014.
Walter was born on June 2, 1922 in Buist, ID to Walter and Sarah Jane (Woodland) Vanderwood. He was raised and educated in Yakima and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Walter met Geneva Johanna “Jo” Leusink at a roller skating rink in Yakima. They were married on August 24, 1946 in Hull, IA, and made their home in Prosser. They moved to Grandview in 1954 where he owned Walt’s Auto Repair. In 1967 they moved to Yakima where he worked at Morton’s Supply as a heavy equipment mechanic until he retired.
Walt and Jo were full time RV’ers for many years, making many friends and visiting relatives. After Jo passed away, Walt traveled for two years; then moved to Wenatchee. The last four & ½ years he lived with his daughter, Sharon. In 2013, he and grand-daughter, Alesia, took the Honor Flight to WA DC.
He was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Prosser, Grandview, and Yakima, and recent years attended the Dryden Community Church (with his friend Jean Rosendahl), and Wenatchee Free Methodist. He was also a member of the Senior Center and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He loved time with his family; making sure everyone was happy by chiming, “Is everybody happy?!” Walt enjoyed doing any helpful project, playing pool, card games, fishing, camping, and using his metal detector to find treasures with and for his grand-children.
He is survived by three children: Sharon Morris and friend Wolfgang Mueller, of Wenatchee, Sandra Reich and husband David, of Kalispell, MT, and Rodney Vanderwood and wife Kim, of Lacey; brother Henry Vanderwood of Yakima; six grandchildren: Alesia, Nanette (James), Stacie (Nick), Katie (Brandon), Jonathan (Leena), and Jena (Fiancé, Scott); seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Geneva “Jo”, three sisters and two brothers.
Graveside services with Full Military Honors will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 21st at the Prosser Cemetery. Memorial services will begin at 12:00 noon at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Prosser. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Research.
