Stephen Howard Christen

d. November 15, 2013

After a year-long battle with cancer, Stephen Howard Christen, 56, of Prosser, found peace again on November 15, 2013.
He was born on October 7, 1957, to Howard and Dawn (Grover) Christen in Prosser, where he was raised and educated. While attending Prosser High School, he met the love of his life, Shannon Ryan. After graduating from Prosser High School in 1976, Steve and Shannon attended Eastern Washington University, where he studied business. On September 30, 1978 Steve and Shannon were married. They later returned to Prosser to join his parents on the family farm, continuing the Christen farming tradition of more than 115 years. He continued to farm and raise his family until he retired in 2009, due to Multiple Sclerosis.
Steve’s passions included spending time with his family, skiing, golfing and woodworking. He attended Bethel Church and was a member of The Washington State Wheat Growers Association and Horse Heaven Community Club.
Steve is survived by his wife and best friend of thirty-five years, Shannon; his son, Travis; his daughter, Stephanie (Sean); two granddaughters, Peyton and Rylee; his mother, Dawn Christen; brother, Scott; and sister, Karen (Paul) Easter. He is also survived by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Marion and Venita Ryan; brothers-in-law, Mike (Kris) Ryan and Shawn (Charlene) Ryan; sisters-in-law, Kelly (Mark) Bolander, Tami Ryan and Teri (John) Gilden; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-niece and great-nephew. He was preceded in death by his father, Howard L. Christen, in 2008.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 22, at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Prosser. Burial will follow at the Prosser Cemetery. A celebration of Steve’s life, including lunch, will follow at the Horse Heaven Community Hall.
Steve’s family would like to thank their Horse Heaven neighbors for the endless support and generosity throughout the years, especially the past year.
