Russell Leroy Martin, 71, of Portland, Oregon, passed away at his home on July 29, 2014.
He was born on October 1, 1942 in Longview, Washington to Brodie Everett Martin and Grace Oliver (Ward) Martin. The family moved to Prosser in 1952 where he was raised and educated. He played football and was on the wrestling team at Prosser High School and graduated with the class of 1962. He attended Yakima Valley College and then enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1964. He was stationed in Seattle and served as an Electrician’s Mate Third Class aboard the USS Wechusett. The crew served month long watches between Seattle and Alaska. Russell received an honorable discharge on February 4, 1970. In 1968 Russell became a Journeymen Electrician for the IBEW Local 46 Electrical Union in Seattle until he retired in 2003. He was respected on the job and was asked to be the Foreman on many of the work sites. Russell had the honor of working on several prestigious construction sites such as the Tacoma Dome the Seattle King Dome and the Seattle Space Needle.
Russell moved to Portland in 2009 after getting reacquainted with his high school girlfriend, Diana Olney. Diana and Russell were married on August 28, 2010 in Portland. The couple enjoyed traveling in Hawaii, Missouri, Nevada and Arizona and enjoyed a twenty-one day trip through Europe and a cruise to Alaska. Russell also enjoyed elk hunting and camping. He was a lifelong member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and served on the board of directors of the Oregon Hunters Association Gun Club in Portland.
He is survived by his wife, Diana Martin of Portland; his daughter, Michele Miller and her husband, Andy and their children, Autumn, Mara and Willa of Renton, WA; and Diana’s children, Debra Rains and her husband, Scott of Vancouver, WA and Richard Pickens of Portland and his children, Michael of Portland and Anthony and Vivianna of San Diego. He is also survived by two sisters, Ruth Ellis and her husband, Jim of Spokane and Marcia McDaniel and her husband, Bill of Sunnyside; his brother, Clyde Martin and his wife, Judy of Benton City; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Graveside services with Full Military Honors will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 22nd in the Prosser Cemetery. There will be a reception to follow at the Inn at Horse Heaven in the large meeting room.
