Gerry Mutchmore, 81, of Prosser, peacefully passed away on Saturday, April 16, 2016 at Sheffield Manor.
She was born on September 1, 1934 in Bruceville, Indiana to Ralph Casper Downey and Ivy Violet (Boyd) Downey. She was raised and educated in Bruceville where she met and married her high school sweetheart. She was an Air Force wife for 32 years and moved with her family several times before settling in Spokane. Gerry worked for the Bon Marche and Nordstrom until retiring. She moved to Prosser in 2003 to be with her grandchildren.
Gerry was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church and through the years, devoted a great deal of her time to the Air Force Sergeant’s Association Auxiliary. She brightened the days of family, friends and neighbors by making and giving gifts of candy and other goodies. She was a regular exerciser and was often seen at Curves or the PHS track. Known as the Purple Lady, she enjoyed gardening and sunbathing, her game shows—Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune and Who Wants to be a Millionaire, and yelling at Fox News. But most of all, she loved her grandchildren and attended every one of their activities. Whether it was sports or ballet, she was always there even if it was only practice and could be recognized by the flower in her hair. She will be deeply missed.
Gerry is survived by her children: Tony Mutchmore of Napa, CA, Darlene Darrow of New York, NY and Cynthia (Ed) Lane of Prosser; her three grandchildren: William, Ellie and Christopher Lane; her sister, Joy Retta Howell of Vincennes, IN; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, Ralph Downey Jr. and sisters, Doris Whobrey and Wanda Steffy.
Her family is especially appreciative of the loving care she received by the staff of Sheffield Manor and Lower Valley Hospice. A Celebration of life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 21st at Covenant Presbyterian Church. Memorial contributions may be made to Lower Valley Hospice.
