Merlin Ralph Byrne, age 82, entered in to rest on February 27, 2014 at Sheffield Manor in Prosser. He was born on October 26, 1931 in Driggs, Idaho to Ralph & Edora (Marshal) Byrne. After graduating from High School in Idaho Falls, his father taught him the skills of carpentry which he continued to use his whole life.

On March 16, 1956, Merlin married Reta Bell McManigal in Idaho Falls, Idaho. They lived in Idaho and Colorado before settling in Prosser in 1964. He worked at Hanford from 1964 until the mid-1980’s and then traveled around the West Coast working at various carpentry jobs. After retiring in 1997, he and Reta became a snow birds, traveling to Yuma, Arizona during the winter.

Merlin enjoyed carpentry, gardening, fishing, hunting and going to the casino. He also enjoyed panning for gold and was a member of the Gold Miners Association. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family, especially camping with his kids and grandkids.

Merlin is survived by his children, Debbie Lewis (Mike) of Moses Lake, Leslie Byrne (Jenny) of Prosser, Bobby Byrne of Richland, Kenneth Byrne of Prosser, Kim Hamad of Richland and Darin Byrne (Jolene) of Prosser; 19 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; his sisters, Judy Saxton and Darlene; and his brother, Laverne Byrne.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 53 years, Reta, in 2009. He was followed in death by his great-grandson Kayden Burns.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, March 14, 2014 at Prosser Funeral Home.
