Mary O’Daniel, age 94, entered into rest on October 15, 2014 at Quail Hollow Care Center in Richland. She was born in Bridger, Montana on July 5, 1920 to Adam and Katherine (Rehn) Achziger. When she was 2 ½ years old, the family moved to the Yakima Valley where she graduated from Prosser High School with the Class of 1939. On December 21, 1939, Mary and
Jim O’Daniel were married in Sunnyside. The couple made their home in Idaho where he worked in the timber industry for four years. In 1945, they moved to Prosser and settled on a farm on Byron Road where they owned and operated a Grade A Dairy and grew sugar beets, corn, hay and mint for twenty-one years. Mary worked at Prosser Pack and Twin City Foods for twenty years until her retirement. They moved to Kennewick after selling their farm in Prosser where Jim worked for the Benton County Road Department. After his death, on April 12, 1976, she returned to Prosser.
Mary and Jim were 4H leaders. Mary was an avid gardener and a life time member of the Messiah Lutheran Church.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Carol Lum (Sheridan) of Prosser; four grandchildren, Gregory Lum (Wendy) of Hermiston, Melissa O’Daniel of Sacramento, CA, Jessicia O’Daniel (Chris) of Willits, CA, and Meloney Alfano (Gabe) of Santa Rosa, CA; eight great-grandchildren, Brandon and Tiana Lum, Noah O’Daniel-Woodward, Adam Woodward, Kayla O’Daniel-Lyman, Dylan Lyman, Kali O’Daniel-Alfano and Lexi Alfano; and daughter-in-law, Patricia O’Daniel of Granger.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Adam and Katherine Achziger; her husband, James O’Daniel on April 12, 1976; her son, Timothy James O’Daniel on July 23, 2002; her daughter, Betty Ann O’Daniel on June 22, 1947; her sister, Pauline Hettich; and her brothers, Ted, Adam, Sam, Fred and Clarence Achziger.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, October 20, 2014 at the Prosser Cemetery. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 AM at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Prosser with a luncheon to follow for family and friends. Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 19 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Prosser Funeral Home.
