Together again…Margaret “Peggy” Evans Chapman was reunited with the sweetheart of her life, Jay, Tuesday, January 10, 2012.
Peggy was the middle of seven children born to Robert and Edna Evans in Prosser, Washington, on January 5, 1923. As the older of two girls, Peggy was always very busy helping to take care of her family. This dedication was a lifelong theme for her that Blessed not only her immediate family but many friends and community members as well.
From an early age Peggy was a leader and enjoyed being the 1st female ASB President at Prosser High School in 1941. She also was among the first to play girls basketball in high school. During this time she began dating the handsome young man who later became her husband. This legacy all began in the same high school that we have today.
The advent of World War II brought the enlistment of her three older brothers, Bob, Neil, Ornia, and one younger brother, Don, as well as Jay. Her baby brother Albert would later go on to serve in the Korean War. Peggy also desired to serve her country so she dropped out of Central Washington State College to enlist in the U. S. Navy Waves where she served as a trainer at Instrument Flight School for Navy pilots in Corpus Christi, Texas. She would later say she was chasing Grandpa and it worked.
Peggy and Jay married August 1, 1945 in Olathe, Kansas and returned to Prosser upon their military discharges. As a young married bride she enjoyed raising her children and supporting the family business. She also worked outside the home at Heights Elementary School and Prosser High School. In addition she was very active in the community including JC’s, Elks Club, the bowling league, swimming and Master Gardeners.
Later in life, Peggy and Jay enjoyed several wonderful trips to exotic places, and cherished times with their children, grandchildren and extended family.
Family would like to especially thank Dr. Burr Fields, Lower Valley Hospice, and Sun Terrace employees for their wonderful loving support during Peggy’s final days. They were so greatly appreciated and their dedication will never be forgotten.
Peggy was welcomed into Heaven by the love of her life, Jay as well as her parents and five brothers and many extended family members and friends. She is survived by her little sister, Pat (Cornell) Wickers of Prosser; her two children, Susan (Mike) Stroe of Walla Walla, and Jack (Marsha) Chapman of Prosser; grandchildren Alexandria (Jarrod) Boyle of Prosser, Todd (Abril) Chapman of Prosser, Michael (Danielle) Stroe of Spokane, Matthew (Elizabeth) Stroe of Walla Walla, and Jason Stroe of Spokane; great-grandchildren Sephan Boyle, Mattisen Boyle, Kolten Boyle, Hayden Stroe (and due this spring Jackson Jay Stroe), Mihia Stroe, Kittrick Jay Stroe, Amelia Jay Chapman, and Jacob Chapman and numerous nieces and nephews all who have loved and cherished their time with her.
