Lorene E. Brown, 81, of Prosser, entered into rest on August 1, 2012 at her home in Prosser.

She was born on June 8, 1931 in Hebron, North Dakota to John and Louise (Heinrich) Zimmerman. In 1932, the family moved to Leavenworth, Washington where she was raised and educated until moving to Prosser in 1947. Lorene graduated with the class of 1949 from Prosser High School. She moved to Portland, Oregon and worked as a secretary for Allstate Insurance until her marriage to Merlin Brown on March 10, 1956 in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. The couple has lived in Prosser since where they raised their children.

Lorene began working for the Benton County Assessor’s Office in Prosser as a clerk in 1960. She was promoted to Administrative Assistant in 1974 and retired in 1990.

Lorene was a member of First Presbyterian Church and Beta Sigma PHI Sorority. She loved to cook for her family and was a devoted mother and a fabulous wife of 56 years and enjoyed monthly trips to Nevada with her friends to do a little gambling. Lorene was extremely giving and selfless and always put her family first in all things. Her faith and family gave her the courage and strength to endure an eighteen year fight and a series of surgeries against cancer.

She is survived by her husband, Merlin Brown of Prosser; her sons, Richard Brown of Richland and Mitchell Robert Brown of Sumner; her daughter, Kathleen Wiant and her husband, Jack Sanders of Hawaii; six grandchildren; two step-grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Bill Zimmerman of Pasco; two sisters, Edna Zimmerman of Woodburn, Oregon and Hilda Wall of Leavenworth, Washington; and many nieces and nephews. Lorene was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Ruben Zimmerman; sister, Violet Lundberg; and her first husband, Gary Wiant.

Graveside services will be held at the Prosser Cemetery on Monday the 6th of August at 10:00 a.m. A Memorial Service will follow at 11:00 a.m. at Prosser First Presbyterian Church along with a reception. Memorial contributions may be made to Beta Sigma PHI Sorority c/o Prosser Funeral Home.
