Gary Lee Souders

d. January 18, 2015

Gary Lee Souders, 69, of Grandview went home to be with his Lord and Savior on January 18, 2015. He loved the Lord and lived what he believed.
Gary was born on July 6, 1945 in Berkley, California to Warren and Luella (Hamilton) Souders. He was raised and educated in Oakland until being placed in the Salvation Army Children’s Home in Hillburg until its closure three years later. He returned home with an old trumpet he was given and learned how to play it which led to him playing the coronet in The Salvation Army Oakland Citadel Band until his graduation from Hamilton High School in 1963. He then served in the U.S. Navy for three years and returned to Oakland and entered the Salvation Army School for officer’s training in 1967. While there, he met his future wife, Joan E. Kendoll and the couple married on June 15, 1970.

Major Souders and his wife, Joan, served people and communities through the Salvation Army for thirty-nine years including over eleven years in the rural villages of Alaska and also in Utah, Colorado, California, Anacortes, Centralia and Grandview. He attended Bethany Community Church in Grandview and led the Gary Souders men’s bible study since 2004. He was past president of the Lion’s Club in California and Alaska and a member of the Grandview Rotary Club.
Gary enjoyed fishing, especially in Alaska, loved the Oakland Raiders and sports. He also collected antique model cars and stamps. He had a quirky sense of humor and try as he may, could not tell a joke.
Gary is survived by his wife of 44 years, Joan of Grandview; two daughters, Aimee Souders of Grandview and Ericka Souders and her fiancée, Robin Chappell of Eugene, Oregon; brothers, Charles (Gloria) Souders of Pleasanton, CA and Melvin Souders of Berkley, CA; brothers-in-law, John Marks of Vancouver, WA and Jim (Michelle) Kendoll of Washougal; sister-in-law, Joyce (Jim) Thompson of Boise, ID; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Joyce Souders and Patricia Day; and brother, Dennis Souders.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, January 26th at Bethany Community Church in Grandview.
