Edith Ann Smith
Loving mother, grandmother and sister, Edith Ann Smith, 99, died Monday, March 10, 2014 at her Yakima home with her family by her side. Edith was born in a sod house in Atwood, Kansas on February 13, 1915, to Joseph and Josephine Hrenchir. She was raised and educated in Atwood and Herndon, Kansas. After high school, Edith became a teacher and taught 1st through 8thth grade in a one room rural school house in Atwood. She met the love of her life, Ignatius Smith, when he picked her as a pen pal from the Catholic Extension Magazine. After a year of correspondence, he invited her to Prosser to meet his parents. She stayed in Prosser and the couple was married on June 24th 1946 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Prosser. They lived a happy life in Prosser farming and raising their twin daughters, Mary and Theresa.
Edith was a kind and loving mother, wife, grandmother, sister and friend. Words cannot express how much she will be missed. She was an avid gardener and homemaker and enjoyed canning and sewing. She was a loving caregiver to her brother-in-law, Tony Smith. Edith was an active member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Prosser and active for many years in the Altar Society.
Edith is survived by her daughter, Mary Hopfinger and son-in-law, Jim Hopfinger of Yakima; her grandchildren, Stephanie Black-Wolney (Harvey) of Yakima, Therese Hopfinger of California, and Dustin Hopfinger of Yakima; her sisters, Mary Worden and her husband, T.E. and Veronica Ziegler, all of Yakima; and many more family and friends.
Edith was preceded in death by her husband Ignatius on May 18, 2005; her daughter, Theresa Smith on June 24, 1971; her sister, Alice Hamil; and brothers, William and Henry Hrenchir.
Viewing will be held at Prosser Funeral Home on Friday, March 14th from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. and Recitation of the Rosary will begin and 6:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 15th at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Prosser. Concluding services and burial will follow at the Prosser Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Yakima Valley Memorial Hospice.
