An Angel knocked on the door of Richland Life Care Center on November 18, 2012 to take E. Joanne Backer-Wendt away from the pain and suffering that has been with her since the age of 19. Joanne was born in Yakima, WA on August 6, 1943 to Elmer Backer and Ethel (Anderson) Backer. They lived in Thorp and Yakima during her youth. After her father’s death in 1951 and the marriage of her mother to Bill Thomas they moved to Richland in 1953, then to Prosser in 1955 where she graduated from Prosser High School in 1961. She met her friend for life, Ferg Wendt and they were married in 1963. They moved to Fort Hood Texas where Ferg served in the Army, then returned to Prosser to make their home.
Their life was surrounded with life-time friends, Prosser Mustang sports, slow pitch softball, annual trips to Lake Curlew for fishing and visiting cousins in Republic, WA and cruising in "Big Red" their 1963 Plymouth Fury. Joanne was a member of the First Presbyterian Church for 47 years. For several years Joanne and her friend Wanda Brownlee had a cake business. These cakes were enjoyed by many in the Yakima Valley.
Joanne was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Ethel (Thomas) Backer; her husband, Ferg Wendt; daughter, Misty Joy Wendt; son, Lance (Ferg) Wendt; and step-father, Bill Thomas. She is survived by her grandsons, Landen Wendt, Javier Lobos, Preston and Josh Van Velkinburgh; granddaughters, Jesselynn and Miranda Lobos; daughter-in-law, Christine Rumsey-Wendt; brother, Bud (Dortha) Backer; brother-in-laws, Lowell (BJ) Wendt and Larry Gidner; and many nephews and nieces. Her family, as well as her friends, will always remember her beautiful smile and her easy sense of humor.
There are many we need to thank; Especially the staff of Life Care of Richland, DaVita Kidney Center, Pastor Paul Fredericks and Joanne’s special cousins, Phillip and Karen Bell. Our love to all of you.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 912 Yakima Ave., Prosser, WA or the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Attn: Memorial, P.O. Box 19024, Seattle, WA 98109 in Joanne’s name.
