Dale Roger Mains passed away on Saturday, May 2, 2015 in Prosser Memorial Hospital. Dale was born August 24, 1935 to Sterling & Nellie Mains in Villisca, IA. He graduated from Villisca high school in May 1953 at the age of 17. Dale then joined the army in June of that same year. He took his basic training at Fort Riley, KS and was in the 10th infantry division . After basic training, he went to Camp Carson, CO. Dale was then stationed at Camp Hale, which was out of Leadville, CO. There, he was in the Mountain and Cold Weather Training Command for 2 winters. He trained officers to ski and participated in mountain climbing maneuvers. Dale was then sent to Germany with the 4th infantry division in April 1955 and then was transferred to the 2nd Armored Division where he served for 3 years. While in Germany, he attended the 7th Army NCO Academy and graduated with honors. He attained the highest score at the Academy that was given up to that time. When he came back to the U.S. he was sent to Ft. Hood, TX for 6 months with the 2nd Armored Division. He was honorably discharged as a Sgt 1st Class. He met Gail Johnson (from Pasco) in Colorado Springs, CO. They fell in love and were married in Pasco, WA in 1960. He attended college for 5 years and received his CPA license in 1970 in WA State. He has worked in Public Accounting in the Tri-Cities and surrounding area’s since December 1965, 50 years.
Dale loved music and sang in a church choir most of his life. He was a member of and also served as treasurer and a deacon in the Pasco Presbyterian Church. Dale was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Kennewick since 1998, sang in the choir and advised in treasury situations.
Dale loved to visit with everyone and told jokes and stories of his youth to family, friends and clients. He was a member of Pasco Kiwanis for many years and served on The Council on Aging board of directors. For many years he was an avid golfer, spent many hours on the Columbia River and at Priest Lake, ID with his family in his boat fishing and water skiing. Dale designed, and with the help of family and friends, built a vacation home at Priest Lake in northern Idaho where he enjoyed time with family and friends on the water and in the mountains. He also had a love of history and spent much of his later years researching his family genealogy, with special emphasis on The Mayflower Society.
Dale leaves his wife, Gail, of almost 55 years, sister Donna Fleer (Larry), daughters, Diane Mains (husband Waylon Collopy) and Cheryl Mains. Grandchildren, Nicole Daily (Jeff), Erin Lagrone (fiancé, Michael Tompkins), Stephanie Fayard (Josh), Kurtis Clawson (Katy), Ross Clawson, Jessica Weir (Adam), Michaela Bernt. He also leaves great grandchildren, Mackenzie, Jadeyn, Abby, Gracie, Emmett, Kaden, Kyla, Ellie, Daniel, Jude, Symphonie, Spencer and Aiyanna.
Dale was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth Mains an older brother who died in childhood, his older brother, Harold Mains (Lauralee), and oldest daughter Teresa Schnirl (Scott).
A Memorial Service will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 9th at the Kennewick Presbyterian Church.
