Calvin Bruce Skotland passed away on Friday, March 1, 2013 at Sun Terrace in Prosser. His family wishes to express their thanks to the caregivers at Sun Terrace and to Lower Valley Hospice for the care, compassion and respect that Cal received.
Cal was born on September 30, 1925 on his Uncle Walfred Nelson's farm in McHenry County, North Dakota to Jason Engelbert Skotland and Leedina Alice Elenora (Nelson) Skotland. He was raised and educated in Willow City, North Dakota. He received his Bachelor of Science from Utah State and his PhD in plant pathology from the University of Wisconsin. Cal and his wife, Opal (Wimmer) were married on September 4, 1949 in Logan, Utah. Cal worked at North Carolina State University before moving to Prosser in 1956 to begin his Career with WSU at the Irrigated Agriculture Research and Extension Center. He was well known both domestically and internationally for his research with Hops and Mint. He was a Professor Emeritus at WSU.
Cal served in the US Navy during World War II and was honorably discharged on July 18, 1944.
Cal is survived by his sons, Bruce Skotland and his wife Bev of Selah and Gerald Skotland of Kennewick; seven grandchildren and his sister, Janice Hanson of Willow City, North Dakota. He was preceded in death by his wife, Opal and daughter, Kristie.
Cal was an avid outdoorsman and was especially passionate in the pursuit Canadian Geese and Elk.
Cal was a man of great integrity and compassion and will be missed. His funeral will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Prosser Ward on Thursday, March, 7 at 11am.
