Arthur E. Berg, aka Horse Heaven Harry, passed away on March 9, 2013 in Prosser. He was born on December 12, 1916 to Ernest and Josephine (Schuller) Berg. He grew up in Yakima, graduated from Yakima High in 1935 and was named MVP in the state basketball tournament they won.
Art then attended Washington State College to play basketball, among other studies, before he was called home to take charge of the family business due to the depression and an ailing father. During this period, he married childhood sweetheart, Hope Lenzie. They made their home in Yakima, then Pasco, then Richland, while he worked at Hanford from 1948 to 1954.
He then took his family, of wife and two sons, “back” to the Horse Heaven Hills to what he loved most: Farming!
In 1961, he and father-in-law, Frank Lenzie, were presented with the State Rangeman of the Year Award. (The year of the White Horse, another story).
Art’s wife, Hope, died in 1972 and he later married Bernie Dolquist. Bernie died in October of 1998.
Art farmed cattle and dry land wheat till his retirement in 1998.
He treasured the banter of his three grandchildren, Nicole, Matt and Steven Berg, day to day and reveled in teasing and humoring his five great-grandchildren, Bennett, Kate, Daniel, Hunter and Kellen Berg.
Not only did he outlive all his fellow farmers on Horse Heaven, but also his four older sisters and two younger brothers.
Art is survived by his oldest son, Frank Berg and wife, Roberta and his youngest and best looking, most talented and imaginative Barney Berg and wife, Lana
A Graveside Service will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, March 15, 2013 at the Prosser Cemetery.
