Andrew J. Conner

d. April 22, 2012

Andrew J. Conner, 78 of Prosser, a loving family man, honorable veteran, and generous friend passed away at his home Sunday night April 22, 2012. Andy to some and Jack to others, was revered and loved by all he came in contact with. He was a proud patriotic man, born in 1933 and raised with four siblings in Neosho, Missouri, who grew up during some of the nation’s toughest times and entered military service early in life.

He and his wife Marie were married in August 1956 and proudly raised five children. His 31 year Army career was never short of challenges, an infantry paratrooper during the Korean War, a Special Forces Advisor in Vietnam, a member of the Army Staff at the Pentagon, and stationed with the old guard at Arlington National Cemetery, he was one who sought the tough assignments. He and his family made home in numerous locations both foreign and domestic, with the family favorite being Hawaii, where they spent ten years during his multiple tours to Vietnam. He retired from active duty in October 1979 as a Sergeant Major having served in operational and staff positions at numerous levels of command. He went on to have a second successful career on the Security Force at the Hanford Reservation, and after 19 years he retired, for a second time, as the Chief of Security.

He loved to play golf, had a passion for fishing, and was very mechanically inclined. If he wasn’t at one of his favorite fishing spots, he was sharing tips to sharpen other’s golfing skills, rebuilding one of several automobiles, or enjoying a good football game. A generous man that any one of his family members or friends could count on in any situation; he was emphatically admired and loved.

He is survived by his wife, Marie, children Charlie of Washington D.C., Ronah (Walt) of Naches, WA, Tommy (Ronetta) of Fredrick, MD, Billy of Kennewick, WA, and siblings, Ed of Lebanon, OR, and Nancy of Hutchinson, KS; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Robert Andrew Conner and brothers, Jimmy and William Conner.

Memorial Services with Full Military Honors will be held at Friendship Baptist Church in Prosser at 1:00 pm, Thursday, May 3, 2012. Visitation will be held at Prosser Funeral Home on May 1st and 2nd from 4:00 to 7:00 pm.
