Lee Sartain of Grandview, Washington was born in Tishomingo, Oklahoma to James Orvile and Audrey (Martin) Sartain on May 24, 1928 and went to be with his Lord and Savior on June 7, 2015. He left this world surrounded by his loving wife, his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Lee grew up and attended school in Russet, Oklahoma. In his early years, Lee worked hard and helped his parents provide for their family. At the early age of 17, he moved to Washington and began working on the Roza Canal. He entered the service in 1951 and served stateside during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge, he began his construction career as a union carpenter apprentice. Lee worked on many construction projects, including McNary, Priest Rapids, Ice Harbor, John Day, and Little Goose dams, as well as, the Downtown Yakima Mall and Kadlec Hospital and he spent many years of his career working on the Hanford Nuclear Reservation. He finished his career with Mountain States Construction Company and retired in 1989. His carpentry was his career, but woodworking, cooking, and gardening were his passions. He was a true woodworking artist. In retirement, he made tables, bird houses, hutches, and other pieces of beautiful furniture. He had a big, beautiful garden and he always grew plenty and shared the bounty with others. He enjoyed cooking for all his friends and family.
He would always tell his kids and grandkids “I’m gonna learn ya" how to do something. He was sure to tell everyone that his family was his legacy.
In July 1948, he married Zaida Fordyce in Toppenish, WA. They had five beautiful children. In May 1981, he married the love of his life, Ellen Young in Prosser, WA. He is survived by Ellen, his wife of 37 years; his sons, Vernon Sartain of Goldendale and Rick (Kathy) Sartain of Grandview, and his daughter, Kimberly (Kal) Fuller of Grandview; his step-daughters, Sandra Weis, Susan (Virgil) Hill, Carol (Jerry) Koontz, and Brenda (Ken) Nipper. He is survived by his son-in-law, Roger Menshew, and his daughter-in-law, Sue Sartain. He is survived by 19 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Johnny (Joan) Sartain of Montrose, CO; and his sisters, Serena Soto of Prosser, WA; Hilda (Bob) Bicknell of Maple Valley, WA; Mary Jo (Luis) Herrnandez of Renton, WA; and Patsy (Brian) Cline of Visalia, CA; and sister-in-law, Linda Sartain. He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Kathy Menshew, and his son, Charles Sartain; his step-grandson, Brian Lehman; his parents; and his siblings, Jean Myers, J. W. Sartain, and Don Sartain.
Lee was a faithful member of the Anchor Point Southern Baptist Church in Grandview, WA. The celebration of life will be held there (609 E. Bonnieview) on Friday, June 12th at 11:00 AM. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM at the Prosser Cemetery.
